WE SEEK TO SPREAD THE MAGIC OF THE CULTURAL, SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL PROCESS THESE PIECES EMBODY, SO THAT THE PEOPLE WHO WEAR THEM CAN CARRY THAT KNOWLEDGE WITH THEM AT ALL TIMES
We are a Mexican commercial enterprise with a mission to build a bridge between indigenous artisanal makers and consumers all over the world. Over the past four years, Toco Madera has been working directly with indigenous artist communities in Mexico, developing deep and meaningful bonds, and collaborating with them to create beautiful timeless pieces of clothing and accessories. Our artisans and their communities share a vision with us towards making beautiful and meaningful quality work that showcases the talent of Mexican artists.
One of our main goals is for our products to be worn with pride by people who like their clothes to be made with purpose and social consciousness, people who appreciate the uniqueness of handcrafted work, and that understand and respect the immense value of a piece woven thread by thread.
The women who weave our textiles are at the core of our business and belong to a region of southern Mexico characterized – among many other things – by the distinctive tradition of its artisanal work: Los Altos de Chiapas. Proud of their knowledge and family traditions, these women of Los Altos recognize each other through their weaving; transforming it into manifestations of identity and self-expression. Their art is an extension of their family legacy, passed from mothers to daughters through love and knowledge. Our weavers are Ernestina and her sisters from Batsitetic, Chiapas; together they create the cotton textiles. The natural lamb wool loom products are made by Claudia and her mother in San Juan Chamula.
Through this link you can find more information about Ernestina and Claudia, their families, culture and beliefs, as well as detailed descriptions of their textile traditions and weaving process. At Toco Madera we believe in the importance of our artists and artisans to be known and celebrated for their work, so we invite you to read about them and learn about the women behind the products you love.
FOR US MEANINGFUL WEAR IS A CONCEPT THAT APPLIES TO CLOTHING ITEMS AND ACCESSORIES THAT EXPRESS MEANING BEYOND ITS MATERIAL FORM.
In Toco Madera we strive to connect our customers with the makers of their chosen pieces. We seek to build a lasting bond through the cultural, social and emotional context of the piece, which will henceforth be worn in a unique manner because hand and heart made work transcends trends; it operates on a plane that, unlike fashion, is timeless. These are pieces that express great meaning, not only because of the ecological and social consciousness behind the production process, but also because of all the magic, love and energy poured into them by the hands of the artisans making them.
You can rest assured that our practices are guided through the principle of transparency at every step, maintaining fair commercial practices, keeping production at a manageable and environmentally conscious rate, and guaranteeing fair compensation to our artists and makers; so that our products can reach the hands of customers who value meaningful garments.
To call the textiles and huipiles these women produce as “handmade” seems to us to fall short in terms of describing something that was not only created with their hand but with their hearts and souls. The textiles tell the story of the life of each woman, her children, her community, and her environment, articulating technical and creative skills with every line. Their manual work is their outlet to represent and demonstrate hundreds of years of tradition, history and culture.
ON SOLID GROUND
At Toco Madera we continuously strive to recognize the work of the weavers from Los Altos de Chiapas from a place of deep admiration. Our work comes from the heart; starting with authentic recognition and profound respect for the weaving tradition, which is why we consider this a heart made project. We consider our work an integral part of preserving the weaving tradition and to encourage and empower the women in our network; forever defending the importance of their work, manual skills, and their cultural heritage. Transparency is a crucial priority to our operation, activating our production chain in a conscientious manner. We have made a commitment to engage with our artists through the lens of social conscience, cultural understanding, and human respect at every stage.
